The Alabama chapter of the Alpha Phi sorority created the video below in order to attract young women to their sisterhood. The video soon went viral, with many critics complaining that the video lacked diversity and was un-empowering. In fact, so negative was the response that even the university became involved.
Alabama’s Associate Vice President for University of Relations Deborah Laneresponded to the homogenous video in a statement on Saturday
This video is not reflective of UA’s expectations for student organizations to be responsible digital citizens. It is important for student organizations to remember what is posted on social media makes a difference, today and tomorrow, on how they are viewed and perceived.
What hateful nonsense! These appear to be friendly and fun loving students, who are enjoying their sisterhood. As for diversity, I am fairly certain that if a similar video was taken of the campus’ Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, there would also be a lack of diversity. I also suspect that said lack of diversity would be a non-issue.
This is nothing but a big glass of haterade! Not a good look.
Take a look at this video and tell me if you see anything objectionable about it.
